I’m pretty sick of hate against fetishists. I frequently find myself hanging out with a friend or a group and the conversation turns to fetishes. Then suddenly everyone is slewing hate, most frequently criticising furry and animal play or exhibitionism. I always get really uncomfortable… Would we still be friends if they knew my kinks?

Furry isn’t a fetish, it’s a fandom. There are furry-flavored fetishes that have come out of the furry fandom (like having sex in fursuit, for instance, which is what almost everyone defaults to when they think of furry fetishes, or just furry porn in general), but saying ‘furry’ as a fetish really paints a negative light on the fandom as a whole. I know the fandom really does that well enough on its own, but I really feel one should be a bit more specific when referring to furry in the context of a conversation involving fetishes.

Also, many, many, many of the fetishes within the furry fandom come from other subcultures, as well. The only real difference is, well, anthropomorphic animals.

That being said, most people don’t ‘get’ some less mainstream fetishes. Sure, everyone’s down with light BDSM now, but things like pet play conjure up really squicky images just by the words alone. If people don’t know the lingo, they’re obviously going to think the worst. When I first heard of pet play/pony play/animal play many a year ago, yeah, my first response was akin to ‘ew gross you play with animals??’ before understanding, oh, no, you’re just pretending to be an animal okay whatever.

(For the record, I have zero issues with pet play itself, but there are things within that sub-subculture that make me wrinkle my nose in distaste. None of them have to do with the fetish itself.)

And even THAT is weird for most people. I mean, people assume that folks who look at furry porn (in any capacity) are sexually interested in animals and, therefore, are into bestiality and zoophilia. To people not in the know, these things blur together very easily.

Also, some people just aren’t going to get, understand, or even like other fetishes. That’s simply the way it is. I have EXTREMELY negative reactions to babyfurs/infantilists/adult babies. I don’t like it, I don’t get it, and sure, it doesn’t affect me (unless I’m at a convention and some asshole thinks it’s a cool idea to shit in his diaper in an elevator full of people - which has happened), but I don’t like it at all. I wouldn’t be a jerk and say this to someone’s face, but I certainly wouldn’t want to be around them because it both makes me uncomfortable and I think it’s gross.
